Umahi directs EBSIEC to conduct 2020 LG Polls
Ebonyi-Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has directed the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission, EBSIEC to conduct the 2020 Local Government Election in the State.
The directive of the Governor was contained in a Public Announcement signed by Barr. Samuel Okoronkwo, Hon. Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters and Rural Development and Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji, Commissioner for Information and State Orientation.
It read: “In exercise of his powers under Ebonyi State Coronavirus and other Dangerous (Infectious) Diseases and Related Matters Law, 2020 and Regulations thereof and all other enabling laws thereto, the Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency Engr. Chief David Nweze Umahi FNSE FNATE has issued Executive Order lifting the suspension of Electoral Processes and Political Activities for the 2020 Local Government Elections in Ebonyi State.
“To this end therefore, the Governor has directed Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) to immediately commence activities for the conduct of the 2020 Local Government Elections in the State as required by law.”
Meanwhile, an Enugu State-based lawyer, Kelechi Chukwu had last week, dragged Governor Umahi to court, seeking the nullification of the appointments of the Caretaker Chairmen in the State.
In suit number HAB/90/2030, the lawyer, who hails from Onicha Local Government Area of the State, also asked the Court to direct Governor Umahi and the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) to immediately conduct election for Chairmanship positions and all other elective positions in the 13 LGAs of the state.
The matter had been slated for hearing at the State High Court on 21st September, 2020.
