One of the most topical Social issues trending in Nigeria in recent days is the spike in the number of reported cases of rape in Nigeria. In reality, many more go unreported for several reasons.
To say that rape is pure evil is an understatement. It represents a sickening violation and dehuminization of the victim; indeed, a throwback to the pre-historic period when it might have appeared right. But we live in modern times, when human life ought to be sacred, and treated with respect and dignity, in-spite of our social, political or economic status.
I stand with those who condemn rape, and prescribe the harshest possible punishment, to protect victims and punish offenders. This is the position of the 9th National Assembly and in the coming days, I intend to join my colleagues as we review extant statutory provisions relating to rape.
To support my Constituency in confronting the shame of rape. I intend to collaborate with the Ebonyi State branch of Federation of Women Lawyers ( FIDA), headed by Barr Mrs Grace Chima. Having collaborated and assisted them in a few cases in the past, I salute their efforts and will donate the sum of one million naira to encourage their efforts in enlightenment, identifying and prosecuting rapists.
A million naira is just a drop in the ocean. I call for more support to this group from the public.
Furthermore, because i observe a direct nexus between rape and poverty, my office intends to set aside an initial training and empowerment fund of 20 million naira ( Twenty million naira), to train and equip desirous young women from Afikpo North and South, in the art of sowing, hair dressing and computer technology. Details of this program will be unfolded in the coming days.
Finally, let me hope that we continue to make all sacrifices necessary to stay safe by wearing our masks and observing all the other recommended protocols.
May God continue to protect us all!!

Member Representing Afikpo North/ South Federal Constituency.
