EBONYI – The Committee set up by Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State to ensure peace and harmony between Farmers and Herders, Monday stressed the need for peaceful coexistence between all and sundry in the State.
The Local Government Advisory Committee, was established by Ebonyi State House of Assembly Law 004 of 2015 and charged with the responsibility of advising the Governor on the General Affairs of the Local Government Areas.
It is a standing Committee to the Ministry of Border Peace and Conflict Resolution for the resolution of disputes in the State or any other responsibility as may be assigned to the Committee by the Governor including the Settlement of Herders/Farmers impasse in all the thirteen LGAs.
The 18-Member Committee which was drawn from the thirteen LGAs of the State were in Abakaliki LGA, where they had a crucial meeting with the Leadership of the Herders/Farmers, Traditional Rulers,Town Union Presidents and Secretaries, STAs,TAs and Representatives of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Coordinators of Abakaliki, Ekumenyi, Enyida Development Centres, Mr. Ekene Ede, Mr. Ebere Nwogba and Mrs. Augustina Nkwuda respectively, Councillors, Liaison Officers, Management Committee Members, former Councillors and other officials of the Council on how farmers/herders could live harmoniously.
Addressing the gathering at Nkaliki, Headquarters of Abakaliki LGA, the Chairman of the Committee, Chief Chukwu Hycianth Nwode called on the herders to restrain their cows from destroying crops belonging to farmers and for farmers, to avoid killing cows belonging to herders.
Nwode who added that the Governor would not fold his arms and allow anybody to distibilize the existing peace in the State warned both parties to restrain from killing anybody for any reason as peace remain paramount to the development of the State.
“Our job is very simple. The Governor of the State is not only a Governor but a man who God has given to Nigeria to make peace. We will give out our numbers so you can call. Don’t kill any cow, don’t kill anybody, don’t destroy any crops. Let us live in peace and harmony.”
In his remarks, the Secretary of the Committee, Barr. Ikeuwa Omebeh explained that Nigeria remains an indivisible entity and so, Nigerians everywhere should be allowed to coexist and live in peace.
He charged the LGA to constitute similar Farmers/Herders Committee at both Community and Ward levels in order to forestall any form of dispute between both parties.
“Ebonyi is the most accommodating State in the country. I want to use this opportunity to thank the Governor for the proactive measures taken so far. Peace engenders development. Ebonyi State governor is the best in development in the south east.
“This meeting is to mandate the local government area to constitute a LG Committee of farmers/herders settlement at both the Community and Ward levels. We want to direct that the chairman of Abakaliki in liaison with the Councillors and others at the various Wards to step down the message on the need to ensure peace and harmoniously Relationship among both parties.
“Any breach to peace is criminality. The Governor will not fail to deal with anybody that will constitute a clog in the wheel of progress of the state. We want our visitors and Ebonyians to live in peace.”
Earlier, Hon. Ogbuefi Zaccheaus Ifeuwabundidi, Member/Public Relations Officer, Local Government Advisory Committee who thanked God for making the gathering possible noted that one of the reasons behind the setting up of the Committee was to ensure the provision of lasting peace between the Farmers and Herders in the State.
