Abakaliki-THE Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, NSP, yesterday stated that there was no rehabilitation Specialist in the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA’s workforce to carry out rehabilitation services on behalf of patients.
The organization recommended that it will be appropriate to engage physiotherapists who are specialists in disability rehabilitation, in promoting statutory immunization against conditions that may lead to possible disability.
The President of Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, Dr. Nnenna Nina Chigbo who stated this during a zoom meeting with stakeholders in Physiotherapy, the Health sector, including patients, to celebrate Universal Health Coverage, UHC, described the exclusion as an aberration.
“We considered this exclusion an aberration. There is Community Based Rehabilitation Directorate as a component of National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), yet there is no rehabilitation specialist in the Agency’s workforce to carry out these rehabilitation services.
“The health specialist who is key to both promotion and prescription of physical activity is the physiotherapist and is needed at the primary healthcare center, which is the hub of preventive medicine.
“The inclusion of rehabilitation and the care of the elderly (geriatrics) as part of the mandate of the primary healthcare center services is commendable but the major rehabilitation specialist, that’s the physiotherapist is excluded in the minimum workforce needed at the primary healthcare centers.”
According to her, consequence of the exclusion “is that the populace has been denied international best practices. Similarly, care has been made burdensome on the physically challenged in the hinterlands. Most of them would have found assessing the most basic form of rehabilitation in their locality difficult.”
Chigbo further stressed that the inclusion of Physiotherapy as part of the Primary Health Care model will engender Health for all and ensure that everyone benefits from the best available care.
She added that “to have effective contribution by the Physiotherapists, the government has to step in and incorporate the services alongside other primary healthcare services.”
Punchynews gathered that different Chapters of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, including Ebonyi, Enugu, Jigawa, Kano, Lagos, Abịa among others participated in the meeting.
