FORMER Governor of Ebonyi State and Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Senator Sam Egwu, weekend donated an E-Library facility to the Ebonyi State University and five hundred brand new laptops to trained students from his constituency, Ebonyi North senatorial District of the State
Senator Egwu made the donation amidst solidarity from both the University community and associates.
Speaking before inaugurating the completed installation of ICT facilities at the University’s Electronic Library, funded through his constituency projects, Senator Egwu recalled the socio-academic and economic challenges that faced the State which propelled his administration to establish Ebonyi State University and implement healthy policies and programmes to boost the education sector during his tenure.
He revealed that his decision to grant free basic education and both local and overseas scholarships to Ebonyians during his tenure was aimed at making Ebonyi catch up with other states educationally.
He expressed joy that his effort had yielded much result as Ebonyi is no longer in shot supply of academics.
Senator Egwu said he will continue to invest in education-related development and urged the university management and staff to put in their best to take Ebonyi State University in an enviable position.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Chigozie Ogbu appreciated Senator Egwu for keeping faith with his dream of liberating the state from the shackles of illiteracy.
Prof. Ogbu while thanking the former Governor for donating the E-Library to the institution assured that the school would make good use of the facility.
Other speakers including the Director and Chief Executive Officer, Centre for Satellite Technology Development, Prof Spencer Onu and the University Librarian, Dr Jonathan Chima lauded the effort of the Senator and expressed the hope that the E-Library will bring the institution to lime light.
Senator Egwu shortly after the inauguration, distributed laptops to the 2nd batch of students beneficiaries of his human capital empowerment programme who were earlier subjected to an intensive training in various skills at Grace Court Hotel and Suites, Abakaliki.
The students were drawn from Abakaliki, Izzi, Ohaukwu and Ebonyi Local Government Areas of Ebonyi North District.
In their separate reactions, four of the students who represented the four Local Government Areas appreciated Senator Egwu for his magnanimity of empowering them with skills and providing them with brand new laptops.
