COVID-19 death: Umahi seals off private hospital over death of COVID-19 patient in Ebonyi
Ebonyi-Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State, weekend, ordered the sealing off of a Private Hospital where the first case of COVID-19 death was recorded in the State.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Francis Nweze stated this after an interactive session between the State Government and members of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Response Team took place at the New Government House, Abakaliki.
According to the Special Assistant, the Governor also directed the relevant authority to revoke the Certificate of Occupancy of the land where the said hospital was established.
Not pleased by the admission and treatment of the COVID-19 patient in the said Private Hospital, the Governor further directed that the Hospital Management be prosecuted in accordance with Ebonyi State Coronavirus and Other Dangerous Infectious Diseases and Related Matters Law 2020.
He explained that the prosecution would serve as a deterrent to other hospitals that might attempt to manage COVID-19 cases without following laid down protocols as prescribed by NCDC.
The Governor who debunked the rumours making the round that the deceased patient of COVID-19 was a Judiciary Staff stressed that nobody died in the Judiciary and as such, the Information was wrong.
“The Governor during the chat directed that the COVID-19 reports in Ebonyi State should henceforth be made on a daily basis and should not be aggregated again. Separate reports, if it is ten in a day, report the breakdown before aggregating them.”
He explained that there were plans by the State Government to build two new testing centers in Onicha and Ishielu Local Government Areas, which will bring to 3, the number of treatment centers in the state, representing one per senatorial zone of the state.
In his views, the establishment of the Centres would help to make testing of suspected cases of COVID-19 easier and faster across the State.
